French Novelist Gustave Flaubert once wrote,“The most glorious moments in your life are not the so-called daysof success, but rather those days when out of dejection and despairyou feel rise in you a challenge to life, and the promise of futureaccomplishments.”I’ve had many glorious moments. When I was six, my single mom, sister Alyssa and I were homelesson the Big Island. We had just moved there from Montana and my momwas trying to make a better life for us by enrolling in college.Unfortunately, with two young children and no steady source ofincome, she struggled to make ends meet and we ended up living in aVolkswagen van on the beach.I knew we were poor. We relied on food stamps. And there weretimes I was so worried about my mom getting enough food that Iwould save my school lunch for her. But I didn’t let this defineme. I didn’t allow for any negativity. I took it as an opportunityto rise to the challenge and today I feel very fortunate that I canshare this experience with others and show them that no matterwhere you come from, you can always reach for higher rungs in theladder of life.My promise of future accomplishments has manifested itself inmany ways. Working for seven years at one of Hawaii’s largestnonprofit organizations, I was able to serve over 6,000underprivileged youngsters on a weekly basis. I’ve helped feed thehomeless as the organizer of Christmas Eve Under Nimitz Viaducts. As Mrs. Hawaii, I broadened public awareness of healthy nutritionfor all, but especially for low-income populations throughout theIslands. As a wife to my husband, Chad, a Honolulu police officer, and mother to my three-year-old son C.J., I uphold traditionalfamily values based on those of our parents and grandparents.I’m saddened to see residents living on our streets anddecisions being made at our State Capitol based on self, notservice. And, I feel compelled to rise to the challenge once again.I truly believe we can eliminate homelessness by putting ourcommunities’ best interests ahead of our own. I’m ready to makethis one of my glorious moments on the next rung on my ladder oflife. I am hopeful you will share this moment with me.Aloha,Jaci Agustin

A mobile app we developed because I kepttryingto look up Hawaiian words and always went to a website thatwasincomplete, or tourist driven. So, I created this to help teach my teens/young adults inourmobile app development class as well as to share the languagethatI love and it's stories.Within this app is a complete dictonary of all 13Hawaiianletters ( 12 with it's own categories, the words that startwiththe okina { ' } are at the begining of the second letter intheword. example: 'Ōlelo would be in the O category.)Also included is the following:Mele/OliAncient Stories and FolklorePicture/Word associationWord of the day push notificationand our very own Top 10 list.We will continue to update the list as we continue toaddfeatures that will help people learn and appreciate theHawaiianLanguage.
